These large-scale works on canvas all completed in 2015 build on many of the same themes that have been the focus of my work for the last two decades. Using chalk, charcoal, watery gesso on raw canvas that has been prepared to be porous, I begin each 6' by 9' canvas without a preconceived design or goal with random and free association of marks to activate the space. This technique of working allows for the marriage of accident and intent as the media soaks deep into the fibers of the canvas and dries in unforeseeable ways. Searching for richness each layer of this process calls for more layers, as a stationary work becomes an environment of restless searching for the complicated nature a two-dimensional work that moves as I move.
